Leadership
A real leader is not someone who delegates tasks. A leader has the ability to unite a group of people into a cohesive unit, acknowledges their strengths and weaknesses, and uses those strengths to reach a common goal while motivating them and maintaining smooth operations. I can proudly say that I've learned this not only in the classroom but also by watching my father escalate the ladder of success by getting down and dirty. He is never afraid of doing the work himself, and because of this, I will never be either.
What I've done
Last fall I had the opportunity of participating in the 2013 Mazda 3 Intercollegiate Competition for my Consumer Behaviour class. EdVenture Partners, Towson University and Mazda partnered to have consumer behaviour courses from different schools around the county compete for the opportunity of presenting in front of Mazda's Top Managers in New Jersey. I was selected as the Head of Research Department for the competition. This opened my mind to a whole new aspect of marketing I had yet to experience. The goal of the project was to create a marketing plan for the all new 2014 Mazda 3, including promotional activities, advertising, PR, market research and segmentation, and lastly, reporting back to the Client. As head of the Research Department I had the opportunity to lead my team in the gathering of data utilizing research tools like a survey, which we distributed to 500 students, and the hosting of two focus groups were 18 students participated. After the whole campaign was finished, we went back and distributed another 500 surveys on campus. We were able to increase awareness of the 2014 Mazda 3 by 52%. Below are the Pre-Campaign Survey Results and the Post-Campaign Survey Results as proof of our work.

What it means to me
For this project, Mazda gave us $2000 to spend on our campaign. We were given a real budget, real tasks and real expectations. To be able to apply all my knowledge in a hands-on experience like this one, made my whole semester exciting. My responsibilities included fairly delegating tasks, following schedules, completing a weekly report to EdVenture partners and present progress to the client, analyzing in-depth interviews with consumers to find trends, overseeing events, utilizing Qualtrics software to analyze the raw data from the surveys and lastly, presenting the research findings to the client.
Where it leads me
Taking a leadership role in this project allowed me to further improve my time management abilities, and allowed me to deeply understand that all team members have strengths, and that in order to have a successful outcome, a leader needs to foster those strengths while helping them improve their weaknesses. I aspire to one day own a successful business, and in today's competitive arena, I will not only have to be a figure of authority, but I will also have to be a team player.
